It’s a well known fact that anyone who goes to Japan will create a collection for something. No? That’s not well known? Well it is now. Japan is THE place for kitschy items and it’s one the quirks I love most about their culture.
When I first visited Japan as a teenager, I fell in love with Hello Kitty and all the stationary that was on sale for her – particularly the pens and mechanical pencils.
Fast forward 11 years and I’m back in Japan again. And despite saying I wouldn’t get sucked in again, I once again walked away with a pencil case full of them haha
What I love is a) the cuteness, exhibit a is above, and b) just how creative they get! The picture above this one is from Hiroshima and the charm on the end is a box of Momoji – the sweet native to Hiroshima, which are made in the shape of maple leaves!
And look at this one from the Mt. Fuji area – with Hello Kitty dressed up as the black egg that is a specialty in the area.
You can find these pen literally anywhere! We found them in the main train stations, airports, tourist attractions – especially the temples – everywhere! This cute one with the pineapples is from Okinawa, down the very south of Japan.
And, of course, Disney gets into it as well, with my favourite aliens 🙂
When visiting Japan, what have you collected? Have you got any other cute Hello Kitty pens?
