One of many amazing Japanese quirks that I love is their ability to take something that is popular over the world and making it their own and somehow making it better at the same time. One of these cases is the Kit Kat.
In Australia, at least, we have your basic Kit Kat flavours, but nothing special or out of the ordinary. Japan is entirely different in that approach. If you can think of a flavour, they’ve most likely made it at some point in time. Everytime I’ve been to Japan, it’s been my mission to try as many different types as possible! And what’s even better is that some are exceptionally special and can only be found in certain regions of Japan, not all over!
I’m going to start off with my favourite one, and the one that was most fought over when I bought some home – the Strawberry Cheesecake. This is a special one in that it’s a region specialty for the Mt. Fuji area. It is amazing – if it’s still being sold when I next head over there, I might just bring home an entire backpack full of them. I joke, but it is unlike anything I’ve ever had before! Get it!!!
This one is a special Easter flavour – Banana. This was available in many different cities and reminded me of the Banana flavoured lollies you can get in the Allen’s mixed bags. Nothing too special.
This is also a special flavour for Spring – Sakura (Cherry Blossom). This was also available all over Japan and is definitely my second favourite flavour. It has such a delicate and lightly sweet flavour. I loved it!
This is one of my least favourite flavours – black tea. Mixed with a sweet kit kat….I’m sure you can imagine why I didn’t like it!!
And we come to my least favourite. Don’t get me wrong, I love Matcha (Green Tea) in it’s drink form, but in Kit Kat – bleugh! Try it at your own risk, at least you can say you’ve tried it. We bought heaps of these thinking we’d love them….we ended up giving them out as souvenirs haha!
